"However, we are not sure there are notebooks with AMD APUs or GPUs that have USB-C as their only display output."

The new 15" MacBook Pros meet that description, though I don't know off-hand whether their GPUs support FreeSync.

Also for USB-C, will this monitor supply power to laptops so connected?

i would totally buy this if its 4k at this price! sadly its 1440. im waiting for a curved 4k monitor
  • rpg1966 - Saturday, February 4, 2017 - link

    Firstly, apparently it's 1600.

Secondly, if it was 4K, it wouldn't be an ultra-wide monitor.

    5120 X 2160 anyone
  • sor - Saturday, February 4, 2017 - link

That would be too sharp for this size, IMO. You'd have the choice between tiny UI or pixel doubling to a rather small 2560x1080, or taking a performance hit to get an odd scaling.

exactly what my next monitor will have. at 100-110dpi. with or without curvature :-)
  • HardwareDufus - Saturday, February 4, 2017 - link

    Honest,
I would like to see a 5120X2160 in a 42" curved monitor with features like this one.
I enjoy using my 2 Dell 1920X1200 monitors side by side... but they've served me well for many years and won't last forever. I'd like to replace them with a single ultra-wide monitor in the future.

AT the moment, I sit about 30" away from my monitors now, so the size at 42" would be good from that distance.

Gpu's should support freesync, but MacOS and the drivers for it don't.
  • Kevin G - Monday, February 6, 2017 - link

Give it time. nVidia supports G-Sync on macOS so it isn't a technical limitation of the underlaying OS.

The real limiting factor here is that all the AMD GPUs that Apple has used that would support FreeSync come in systems with a built-in display already (i.e. iMac and MacBook Pro). The Mac Pro... well the less said about the state of the Mac Pro today the better.

Owning the LG version, personally I can't imagine having even more vertical. It's pretty big as-is, ergonomically it would be awkward for me to use the height. Everyone is different though, I know people using 42" TVs as monitors from three feet away.
  • bernstein - Saturday, February 4, 2017 - link

yep here is one. never going back. but i have to admit neither windows, nor macOS nor most games are built with such huge screens (or VR) in mind: controls in corners (start button, systray, window close, minimap, health, etc) was a good concept, but it clearly isn't the way forward...

Owning a 1440p ultrawide and dealing all the small glitches in games and videos I couldn't imagine having an even more obscure aspect ratio.
  • madwolfa - Saturday, February 4, 2017 - link

    Curved? Pass.
  • sor - Saturday, February 4, 2017 - link

That's unfortunate. At this size I don't even notice the modest curve, in fact it keeps the device from feeling like you're looking at it from a steep angle when looking toward the edges. Now a 24" curve, or a TV that is curved, is rather pointless, but when you're sitting wit in the radius it is rather nice.
  • Murloc - Sunday, February 5, 2017 - link

Flat creates distortions at normal monitor viewing distances with big ultrawides.

This is not a TV, it actually makes sense.
  • zodiacfml - Saturday, February 4, 2017 - link

It could use faster refresh rates for future proofing.
  • Meteor2 - Saturday, February 4, 2017 - link

Well, unless 75 Hz is sufficient, which I rather think it is. But I know it's debated.
  • omf - Saturday, February 4, 2017 - link

Not one; not two; but THREE different ways to designate the screen's aspect ratio in the same article! "2.4:1", "24:10", "2.40:1" Where's "24000:10000" and "0.24:0.1"??
  • sor - Saturday, February 4, 2017 - link

I have this monitor in the LG version. It is amazing. You get the 1600 pixel height you'd want from a 16:10 display, and more width to work in. The pixel density as native is just right, too. A little sharper than the average screen.
  • Achaios - Saturday, February 4, 2017 - link

    I would totally buy this.

My only complaint of my 34 inch Acer Predator X34 GSYNC 3440X1440 monitor is that it is too damn small. I want more screen real estate.

    Waiting for GSYNC version.
  • rarson - Saturday, February 11, 2017 - link

You'll probably be waiting a while. Not too many manufacturers want to make G-Sync anything, let alone 21:10 monitors.
  • Meteor2 - Saturday, February 4, 2017 - link

Expensive, but I would suggest it's good value.

    I want one.
  • WhiteSkyMage - Saturday, February 4, 2017 - link

OK guys, this is what is best to do, if you like this monitor, but you are not sure if you should buy it or not:
    1) Make sure that you have ENOUGH space on your desk! We are really talking about a massive monitor here...
    2) You are going to have to make a difficult decition about your GPU as well! Remember that nVidia doesn't support FreeSync, even though it is and open technology. Because of this you might NOT get the 75Hz with an nVidia GPU, or at least that was it on the LG 38UC99 monitor. I don't know about this one. However take into account that such monitor with G-Sync does not exist! Neither does the Samsung CF791. If you are going for this monitor, I recommend either wait Vega 10 or put in 2 RX 480s in CrossFire.

    3) Check if your games support this resolution. It is true that more games are starting to support ultrawide resolutions, but have in mind that is monitor's aspect ratio is not the standard 21:9. I, myself am buying this monitor with an aim of one game - Star Citizen. I highly suggest you contact developers/publishers of games, and demand support for this resolution. Everybody hates black bars, but developers need to know what we use and support it. Nothing can be done for older games, but the new ones have the potential.
  • Murloc - Sunday, February 5, 2017 - link

it's funny because in overwatch they don't support it on purpose, because it gives you competitive advantage.
  • PGFan - Sunday, February 5, 2017 - link

This monitor would be great if it also came with a remote that had the following functions (at a minimum): Power on/off, volume up/down (without having to toggle through a menu), and input select. With many inputs available and given the large size, this monitor could easily be multi-purpose: serve as a computer monitor and connect to video sources such as TiVo or DirecTV boxes for non-streaming viewing (like in a bedroom). Even a smaller version with these features would be great. I might consider such a monitor for my next one given my ASUS PB278 is starting to fee a bit small and I have enough distance and space on my desk for this beast.
  • Hxx - Sunday, February 5, 2017 - link

Acer going for a productivity monitor as opposed to gaming but still targeting both markets. As an owner of an Acer X34, I would have liked to see the same 1440p but at a higher refresh rate, curvature, and higher size. The fact that they cut down the refresh in favor of higher dpi means they're not necessarily targeting gamers.
  • stangflyer - Monday, February 6, 2017 - link

I am hoping in the next year they will have 3840x1600, 100 hz minimum. GSync/FreeSync, HDR/Dolby Vision. Give me that monitor for $1500 and I will let go of my 7680x1440 surround setup.
    5040x1600 and I will give you $2k.

It is funny how Acer has such big restocking issues with this monitor - It is not even on Amazon anymore, NCIX has none in stock (even though it's listed), Amazon UK has some, but at skyrocket price.
When is this monitor coming to Europe? Like seriously? I wonder is it WHEN if IF now? It has been 2 months since launch and distributor stocks are empty?! ACER WAKE UUUUP!
