Anand, are you going to review Droid Charge as well? It is also coming on Apr 28th. This will be the very first phone with SAMOLED+ display in US. I really want to hear your opinion on this display.

Why would someone buy this instead of a decent android phone? Single core, Froyo, ugly, ...
  • strikeback03 - Tuesday, April 26, 2011 - link

Well, given that most users aren't willing to constantly jump carriers, Verizon has no choice but single core for at least a few months longer. Same for Froyo, IIRC the Xperia Play might launch with Gingerbread and there is a leak for the Droid X, but everything else on Verizon is still on Froyo. Ugly is up to the user to determine, what I wonder is why they are releasing a phone so close in spec to the Thunderbolt. For an extra $50 I see no reason not to get the slightly larger screen and LTE.

Speaking of the Thunderbolt, when will that review be posted? I'd say the same about the MyTouch 4G, but that has been waiting so long I assume it is canceled.
  • legaceez - Tuesday, April 26, 2011 - link

Easy, it's almost the same specs as the Thunderbold so they can justify the $50 for an LTE phone.
  • phinn - Tuesday, April 26, 2011 - link

Because actually I think it's one of the best Android phones out there. Very good performance, great battery life, and I like the curvey design. The back reminds me of a Thinkpad and the front is all gorilla glass and aluminum.. Pretty nice if you ask me.
  • phinn - Tuesday, April 26, 2011 - link

Oh also HTC has said it'll get Android 2.3/2.4 this summer.
  • Spivonious - Tuesday, April 26, 2011 - link

The image quality of that photo stinks, unless the dog's tail really was glowing. At least with today's round of smartphone cameras, I could never replace my point & shoot.
  • Souka - Tuesday, April 26, 2011 - link

Probably glare from a very white tail in bright sunlight...

And no, cell-cameras can only compare to old, or poor quality, point n' shoot cameras.

On trips and events, I still bring along my point n' shoot camera... soo much better pics all around .
  • kkwst2 - Tuesday, April 26, 2011 - link

In related news, your point and shoot could never replace my GH2, which could never replace his 7d, which could ...well, I think you get the point.

There's this thing called optics that says it ain't going to happen. There is some room for improvement in sensor noise and processing, but you're probably not going to overcome the inherently crappy optics of a smartphone camera. A tiny lens plus a tiny sensor equals crap. Fine for most people who want to showcase their drunken debauchery on Facebook, but not for much more.

I have been eagerly awaiting your thunderbolt review only to be disappointed every morning when I check the site at work haha

Would also be nice to see if you all can comment on the root and custom rom situation as the TB is slightly locked but getting cracked and rumors are this will be even more locked than the eurpoean Incredible S as Verizon does not like us playing with our phones.....if it is all locked up then I will be happy for another year with my Droid Incredible (the original - wide open phone)

Only thing I do not like about the Thunderbolt is the odd touch screen. The iPhone 4 is much better and usable.

The mifi feature of the Thunderbolt works great. Use it both professionally and personally.
  • Omid.M - Tuesday, April 26, 2011 - link

What do you mean the odd touch screen?

    Brian and Anand,

So no Thunderbolt review this week? I'm really looking forward to that one.
  • Ryan Smith - Tuesday, April 26, 2011 - link

I've proofread the review - it's done and it's quite good. I'm not going to make promises Brian can't keep, but there's a companion LTE article to go with it that's just about done.
  • Lord 666 - Tuesday, April 26, 2011 - link

Too sensitive for my tastes. Scrolling through the marketplace windows had me accidentally clicking on apps. I'm currently a BB Bold user and still prefer the physical keys. Was testing the Thunderbolt on VZW loaner program.

Did not like the fact the mifi ssid password was stored in clear text. I kept the same ssid for my home wireless and on the mifi to keep it easy. But when I showed friends the phone, it clearly showed the password

Sound quality was good; both on sender and receiver end. Battery life was not as bad as I had heard.

I'm looking to get a world phone by August. Unfortunately, this one is meh to me. Looking forward to a full review.

Please look at the Android versions on these benchmarks and tell me that fragmentation is not an issue.

Gingerbread was publicly released in December of 2010. If I want Gingerbread on my Droid X I have to go download a leaked beta version of 2.3.3 and install it myself.

This phone will launch with an outdated OS despite the current OS having been available for 5 months.
  • bplewis24 - Tuesday, April 26, 2011 - link

Beat your agenda drum somewhere where people will buy into that FUD.

  • steven75 - Wednesday, April 27, 2011 - link

Is what he said not true? This phone will launch with an OS that's 5 months out of date. That's awful.

What other consumer products can say that?
  • stm1185 - Tuesday, April 26, 2011 - link

Why have we not seen the higher resolution display used in the iPhone, or one of matching pixel density on other devices?
  • LordSojar - Tuesday, April 26, 2011 - link

    Uh.... we have?

See qHD screens on Motorola Atrix and the upcoming Droid BIONIC.... There are several other phones in the release pipeline touting similar resolutions.

So yeh... Can we stop with the "Apple is so gud, LAWL"? It's getting old, and the Apple fanboy drool is getting all over the place. The iPhone 4 is old news: slow CPU, single core, and while iOS might be pretty and nicely optimized, its multitasking sucks. The iPhone 4 isn't the end all be all of phones. As a matter of fact, it's terribly dated at this point.

After using a friend's 4.3" Android phone, the iPhone's puny 3.5" screen feels so 2007. I hope a good Windows 7 phone comes out on AT&T with a large screen so I can finally dump my 3gs.
  • steven75 - Wednesday, April 27, 2011 - link

The Atrix has a 4 in display at 960x540.
The iPhone 4 has a 3.5 in display at 960x640.

That's a much higher PPI for the iPhone. The question remains why isn't there even a single Android phone that competes in this one area? Seems odd considering the iPhone is almost a year old and new Android phones come out just about every week.
  • duffman55 - Tuesday, April 26, 2011 - link

There are other equally, if not more important attributes to a display besides resolution. I'd rather screens got quicker response times, lower reflectivity, more natural colors, and deeper blacks before improving on the resolutions we see today.

This is why I don't like the term "Retina Display", it only addresses one attribute.
  • Davinchy - Tuesday, April 26, 2011 - link

I see the year old iphone and year old ipad on the list of competitors. Can we see this years model on the list too or was there a problem getting the test results?
  • Davinchy - Tuesday, April 26, 2011 - link

wow never mind. went and checked the scores and noticed that even the scores you have for the iphone 4 are with the older system version. Those numbers aren't even close to what the currently shipping iphone 4 gets with 4.3. I guess you just grabbed any random numbers you could find and threw them in that graphic.

I hope for the actual review we get current numbers that are actually valid in todays market and not just this FUD.

Archos is releasing all new hardware this summer. PLEASE for the love of Tech get some reviews going on that stuff. I have a Gen 6 Archos 5 and I LOVE it. 200 bucks for a 4.8" screen with 16GB memory installed with a 32GB SD card in it? Can't beat that. Highly moddable with a massive community out there. Full Android support with some really nice Archos specific apps/features installed. The mp3 player for instance is AMAZING! Get on that!
  • strikeback03 - Wednesday, April 27, 2011 - link

Archos is actually making stuff that can be modified now? My Archos 5 IMT is famous for being locked
  • phinn - Tuesday, April 26, 2011 - link

Be fair Anandtech. The SunSpider scores on this Incredible 2 are excellent (some of the best i've seen) but at least test the iOS devices with 4.3.x. The new version of Safari has Nitro built-in and my 2 year old iPhone 3GS gets 5300ms, I would imagine the iPhone 4 and iPad is around 4,000ms.

The benchmarks are better than I expected... Especially SunSpider, with the exception of 3D but I don't play games on my phone anyway (other than beating Final Fantasy 1 recently). Pretty sure this is my next phone, my 3GS is hitting 2 years old.
