The mice look exactly the same from a functional standpoint. Just a new pattern/color scheme. The G5/G500 is the same as it has always been for years. If I recall the only real addition from the G5->G500 move was just an extra button on the side.
The art of giving a useless reply dude. I think its pretty clear that we want to know WHAT the difference is with the new sensor and switch. I used to go on Anandtech to get MORE than the PR soup.
I'd say it's pretty clear from the format of the piece that they don't have reviewed them yet, and thus can't really tell much more about it than what the PR says.
That and the switchable wheel. Di don't like the design of these new bits though... Old G500 looks much, MUCH better... Might go for a Cyborg R.A.T. next...
I also see absolutely no news on joysticks, wheels and flight controllers... Sure, the G27 is excellent, but as a G25 owner, stuff from companies like Fanatech are slowly creeping up and becoming more attractive as time goes by... (the shifter really doesn't feel that good).
The G9x is still my favorite mouse by far. I remember how weird it looked when it was released (nothing by todays RAT standards) and how skeptical I was about it, but it's amazing.
Maybe this will help if you're looking to buy one of these mice mentioned in the comments. I guess you can say I've 'collected' a few mice- I have a G700, a G9x, and a R.A.T. 7 among others.
I'd vote them in that order from most favorite to least. The G700 is my all time favorite mouse. I like how you can charge and play and it feels nice and ergonomic to me - I use more of a claw technique. I also like how it has a lot of buttons on the top and sides. I use for extra functions in games like BF3 (spotting, etc).
I like the G9x as well - it's fairly ergonomic and light, but the G700 won me over due to having more buttons. Seems like a silly thing but it makes a difference. It's definitely a great back up mouse for me.
Finally, the R.A.T. 7 is a cool looking mouse and I thought I'd enjoy theadjustable feature, but I didn't end up enjoying the mouse as much as I thought I would. One you adjust it, the mouse loses it's 'charm' in that regard. Also, I know that you can customize the weight but it still feels very heavy to me. Finally, the thumb side wall is pretty much vertical so I find it difficult to pick up / move the mouse around precisely compared to the G9x and G700.
Let me know if you guys have any other questions and I'll try to answer them as best as I can. Thanks.
Word of warning if you choose a R.A.T.. I moved to one after my G700 buttons went haywire and Logitech gave me the runaround (to their defense I could not find my receipt or date of purchase anywhere). In any case, I thought I was up to a change and picked up a R.A.T. 9.
On the good, while tt takes some getting used to, once you do it can be sweet.
On the bad, the sensor has a tough, rubberized, cover that picks up lint and any small particles on your desk better than any vacuum cleaner will. You will find out how much when your cursor starts jumping erratically around the screen or suddenly it simply won't move at all in some random direction. It is a BIG annoyance but once you clean it you are back in business.
Battery life is plain ridiculous. I think the fault lies on the sleep modes for the mice rather than the battery, although it could easily use an expanded battery.,Not an issue of course if you pick anything else but a R.A.T. 9. Switching batteries is easy enough but it can be a pain if you don't notice it is dying in the middle of a gaming sessions. I've opted to change the battery every time I sit down to play even if it still has some charge left.
Adjustments work for the most part, but some, like the thumb angle cannot deal with a strong grip. I adjusted mine for an open grip (and liked the change) but no matter how much I tighten the screw I can push the thumb support back in.
Just keep those bits in mind if you decide to go for a R.A.T. unit. I would say the one that annoys me the most is the rubber lint magnet. If they change this in the new units its golden.
Sorry to hear that your G700 went haywire. I switched from a R.A.T. 7 to a G700 and it's been great so far after several months. Definitely my favorite mouse. I mentioned it in a comment above.
I'm fine with the 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' mentality. I have a G27 and although it's been out for a few years, I don't know how they would update it much without doing something crazy like slapping paint or decals on it (please don't let them do that).
Surround headsets such as these use Dolby Headphone to achieve surround, which is ideal for a headphone. If it has analog plugs it'll be just stereo/mic.
For me Logitech used to be the 'go to' brand for peripherals. For the past couple of years they haven't brought out any product that would would make me consider them again.
It is of my opinion that they don't need to. They only need to make minor improvements every once and a while to their current products. If it's not broke then don't fix it as they say, and the G5/G500 design for mice is one of the longest lasting and most popular besides Microsoft's Intellimouse.
IMO that's simply because other companies sprouted up (Razer, Corsair, SteelSeries, etc.) making high quality components too, not because Logitech no longer makes good peripherals. Other companies makes flashier stuff that gets more attention, but that's pretty much their entire business; Logitech's PC peripheral lineup is just a small part of what they make so they don't focus as much on the bleeding edge stuff.
While I don't care for the garish design of their keyboards, I do like their mice. I've use MS ones in the past before and they've worked fine but I've had great luck so far with Logitech products. I had an issue with a G9 mouse and they made it right and sent me a G9x in return.
I don't buy every one of their products out of brand loyalty or anything, but I am interested to see what new peripherals they come up with.
Really lost as to why they didn't make their new gaming keyboards mechanical, considering the G710+. They were really late to the mechanical keyboard realm and this just seems like a step back.
Was wondering the same thing. I bought a Corsair K90 a few weeks back because of all the mentions of it here on Anandtech. It came with 2 broken LEDs and the retailer where I bought it wanted me to go through Corsair for replacements. I have not heard good things about Corsairs RMA process and I had heard many a people getting broken LEDs even with their 2nd or 3rd replacement units. So while the price was okay (80€) and the mechanical keys were great, I exchanged it for my money back. I would try a mechanical Logitech keyboard with the LCD in heartbeat for ~150€. As for mice, I'm happy with my old MX518. The wheel is very quiet which is important because my PC is in the bedroom and my wife often goes to bed earlier than me. I had a G5 before, but that was just too loud and didn't offer anything over the MX518 in my opinion. :)
I think you need to be more concerned about waking up your wife with the mechanical keyboard. Any mouse wheel is inaudible over loud mechanical keyboards. ;)
I agree. Since I'm not a big fan of their keyboards, I bought a Razer Black Widow Ultimate Stealth. I do like Logitech's other products though, although I agree with Jodiuh that these products are a bit gaudy. If they made their new KBs mechanical, I'd consider buying one at some point, but I don't want to go back to rubber domes if I don't have to. It's like going from a 16:9 monitor to a 4:3 one...
Dustin, this is not correct. Both the G19 and G510 have been out for years. You can buy them on NewEgg right now. The only thing that's changed is the color scheme, just like the mice.
I have multiple generations of Logitech G keyboards and mice (and a steering wheel for that matter) and love them. Glad they aren't changing the formula, but still looking forward to the next generation.
I used to only buy logitech components. However they made it difficult to get my gaming keyboards replaced. The first time I got nowhere and bought new. The next time I posted a nasty blog expecting to get the same treatment but they replaced both. No luck with my mice since the three year limit expired. Yes they make you prove when you purchased with a receipt. I only have one gaming mouse left which I still use. My keyboards though jamb and stick so badly I don't use them for anything other than testing new rigs.
I am not a gamer though. So I now buy mice from Frys. They have optical mice for $10 with lifetime warranty. Not 3 year warranties like Logitech. Unless Logitech lets me register my products for lifetime warranties I will never purchase another Logitech part. Their products may look like quality but time has proven otherwise.
Saw this coming a mile away. Logitech's G series are my favorite series of mice so I watch their pricing. Everything has been on sale recently so all signs pointed to an update. Nice to see that it doesn't look like they're screwed anything up.
Still glad I picked up a G500 for $35, doesn't look like any real drastic changes.
My first gaming mouse was the wireless G7, loved it to bits and was sad when it stopped working and was EOL. I still have it in its box. Never found a suitable replacement that wasn't £70+ - lots of users complain of lag on wireless mice, I complain about the darn cord on wired mice and never suffered with lag on the G7. The G700 looks tasty, but again is £70. :( Quick remove +replace batteries is a must, and on the G7 there was always one charging the the dock.
The lack of an external charger is the one thing preventing me from replacing my malfunctioning G7 with a G700 or G700s. Sure, I can plug in the cable whenever I need to charge, but that defeats the entire purpose of having a wireless mouse. I figure that if I'm going to have to plug in a cable anyway, I might as well use the cheaper G500.
I have a G700 and it's not really an issue to me having to plug it in occasionally. I just leave the cable right next to the mouse. The mouse battery lasts a few days without charging even at 1000Hz polling rate.
That one in the lower right has that stupid plastic that makes your hand sweat. Warning! DO NOT BUY! Happily amazon let me return it and they paid return shipping.
I second this. The G9/x size and shape is by far my favorite. I like the G700 for wireless and the extra thumb buttons, but if I could have both of those features on a G9xs, it would be the best of both worlds.
Agreed, but it wouldn't be a G9X, would it? I'm sure it would have to grow in size to accomodate extra buttons, like the G700, which I'm perfectly happy with atm.
These being membrane keyboards is a kill for me. I'm on my second Logitech G510, as having had the first keyboard replaced under warranty when the USB cable wore out. The quality of the membrane keys leaves much to be desired, and these keyboards just aren't very durable. I love the screen, but it's not a deal breaker for me, whereas this cheap build quality is. I've had a lot of good Logitech products over the years, but they simply don't last. Their warranty service is great, at least.
Looks like I'm still waiting on the Corsair K95 keyboard, then.
I suppose I've just had bad luck with Logitech durability. And not to mention, they changed the internals of the G510, making it nearly impossible to clean the keys. Which sucked because I ended up losing my left alt key as it was sticking horrendously, and physically removing it ruined it.
Ugly markings. And i bet they will wear off after after a few months. Every single Logitech mouse i've owned that has had a coating over the top plastic (usually silver) has had it wear off. It's the WORST design ever, it's so obvious this will wear off. Usually within the first few months.
I now have a Roccat Kone XTD and it's the best mouse i've ever owned. Better than anything Logitech have and i've had most of there top-end mice over the past 12 years. Glad i left them, Roccats software is miles better as well, extremely customisable.
No love for the G13? Logitech is slipping if they don't think the gamepad deserves a refresh with mechanical keys. Gamepads are extremely popular with both the RTS and MMO crowds, but also popular with people that work in design applications and AutoCAD.
They might be able to undercut Razer if they can redo the G13 with mechanical keys and keep a lower price. I was interested in razer's mechanical gamepad (orbweaver) until I saw the price...I only need to customize it ONCE, so that's not a selling point for me.
I love my G7's and yeah EOL on those but the removable battery packs make swapping easy and you got 2 battery's so swap them and you are good. I liked the feel of them and the extra buttons are nice although I don't always use them. I guess using batteries isn't that bad but it's hard to let go of the G7. Bought several a few years ago to stock up when the ones I have go. I got great deals on a G19 and G510 several years ago and they are nice but worth those retail prices, I don't think so. Of course the G7 was 99 originally too. I don't mind the new styles.
all 6 look dorky. the g700 button look like they're designed to better scrape off (and acumulate) finger grease and gunk. not sure why nobody thinks of this crap while they're designed. does logitech do any research these days? or just pure manufacturing and marketing?
I want the G500 but wireless. I still use my G7 when I can get away with just the one side button, but for games my G500 is fantastic, I just hate the wire on it... but I don't like the shape of the G700 :( Please :-D

No love for the G13? Logitech is slipping if they don't think the gamepad deserves a refresh with mechanical keys. Gamepads are extremely popular with both the RTS and MMO crowds, but also popular with people that work in design applications and AutoCAD.07Galford007 - Tuesday, March 26, 2013 - link
They might be able to undercut Razer if they can redo the G13 with mechanical keys and keep a lower price. I was interested in razer's mechanical gamepad (orbweaver) until I saw the price...I only need to customize it ONCE, so that's not a selling point for me.ikea2000 - Thursday, March 21, 2013 - link

I'm a fan of the G500, so I'll be curious how the G500s improves upon it, despite the fact that the G500s seems uglier.kagey - Tuesday, March 26, 2013 - link
Bought several a few years ago to stock up when the ones I have go.I got great deals on a G19 and G510 several years ago and they are nice but worth those retail prices, I don't think so. Of course the G7 was 99 originally too. I don't mind the new styles.

all 6 look dorky. the g700 button look like they're designed to better scrape off (and acumulate) finger grease and gunk. not sure why nobody thinks of this crap while they're designed. does logitech do any research these days? or just pure manufacturing and marketing?seamonkey79 - Tuesday, March 26, 2013 - link
I want the G500 but wireless. I still use my G7 when I can get away with just the one side button, but for games my G500 is fantastic, I just hate the wire on it... but I don't like the shape of the G700 :( Please :-D
