To be fair if this was Polygon news it would be making preachy 3rd wave feminism remarks about the games in question; something along the lines of condemning the patriarchy for Harley Quinn being a sex symbol.
This is just clean gaming news. Not that odd for a tech site.
What exactly is wrong with this kind of article? Is it not news? If it contained opinion (which is unnecessary for reporting news) or content not related explicitly to video games, I could see a reason for concern. Is it just the fact that it's video games?
The only problem I personally find with this article is that it's fairly redundant to the PS blog's content, which I also follow. AnandTech, to me, is a source for more substantial news and info that goes beyond surface level. This kind of stuff may be spreading their butter a bit too thin.
Anyways, the lineup for this month is decent. I'm glad the PS4 selection is getting a higher budget game.
This has been a regular feature for roughly the last 6 months now.
Anyhow, we do cover gaming to an extent. More so the hardware than the software, but that's always something we can change. Brett for his part likes to write about the subject and I enjoy reading about it, and I find that gaming overlaps well with technology. And ultimately it's additional content, not content in place of something else.
Ryan, I like the article, forget these armchair elitists who like to do nothing more than complain about free content they are taking advantage of. I like getting little updates like this on what's going on the gaming world. Keep em coming as far as I'm concerned.
I particularly like this series because I'm an avid Anandtech reader but only occasional gamer. I don't watch the Xbox or PS stores closely but will bite when I'm reminded by these articles that something I like is up for grabs. Its a worthwhile series.
I already have both PS3 games, but was pondering getting Spelunky, so it'll be cool to get that for "free". I might load Rainbow Moon, depending on the installation size.
To the first two commenters, I for one really like these articles. Gives me a site I visit regularly that I can get this information and comment on it. After all, this site is the place where hardware specs of consoles are also covered, though since Sony and Microsoft are planning a 10 year hardware cycle those articles might not be needed very often.
Anandtech has always been a safe harbor from articles like this and the rabid communities that go with them. Like Aegrum said, if i want this type of content i will go get it from sites whose sole purpose is to provide it. Gaming centric articles have no place here.
To the editors: so this is how it's going to be eh? Anand leaves and everything goes to hell a couple of months later?
And yet, as a casual gamer who doesn't always remember to check up on these free game offerings, I appreciate the fact that they mention this, considering there is a lot of overlap between hardware enthusiasts and gamers. If you don't like it, don't click on it (much like I don't with a lot of the apple articles). Its not that hard.
Agreed. I don't normally click on phone articles, because having an up-to-date phone isn't a priority for me, but I recognize that phones are driving hardware progression and don't complain about them either.
Like phones, games are driving hardware progression. If it weren't for games as well as competition from consoles, video cards would stagnate.
You didn't have to click on the link to this article did you? It's not like you clicked on a title for a hardware review article and... SURPRISE! PS games!!!
There are plenty of us who primarily game on PC but pick up free decent titles on console when they come out. Articles like these provide a helpful quick summary of what free titles are available each month.
